Ninety Percent of Email is now Spam

Monday, November 27th, 2006

The number of “spam” messages has tripled since June and now accounts for as many as nine out of 10 e-mails sent worldwide, according to U.S. email security company Postini.  And, the problem will get even worse as Christmas approaches.

“E-mail systems are overloaded or melting down trying to keep up with all the spam,” said Dan Druker, a vice president at Postini.CNN.com

His company has detected 7 billion spam e-mails worldwide in November compared to 2.5 billion in June. Spam in Britain has risen by 50 percent in the last two months alone, according to Internet security company SurfControl.

It’s Official! - Reno/Tahoe has a new AIGA chapter!

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

As many of you know, some of the folks involved in Reno’s graphic arts have been working on starting a local American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) chapter. They just received confirmation that they have 24 registered members. Reaching, and surpassing, the 20 member requirement is a major milestone in becoming a chapter. They’re now in the process of filing all the paperwork to formally establish their chapter.

The Reno-Tahoe AIGA’s provisional board has been meeting and has come up with some great concepts for programming, including presentations by nationally-renown designers, major corporate brand champions, a summer film series, a job board, studio tours, a best practices “ShopTalk” series, among some other great ideas.

Beyond the programming, AIGA has a primary mission to provide value to its membership. In supporting that mission, they will strive to provide member benefits that give members a substantial ROI on the annual membership fee.

They’re looking for additional members, so sign up today, and help draw national attention to the Reno/Tahoe chapter of the AIGA as they become the best in the West!

"What’s in a name?" - Phyllis Freyer let’s us know

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Phyllis Freyer, vice president of marketing/communications at the newly minted Renown Health, spoke recently at A2N2’s luncheon, and discussed the process used by Washoe Medical Center in selecting a new name.RGJ.com

Here’s Bill O’Driscoll’s report from the Reno Gazette-Journal

A “compelling” case.

That’s how Renown Health officials describe a consultant’s assessment of the need to change the health-care company’s name from Washoe Medical Center.

Finding that new identity was another matter, and last week Phyllis Freyer, Renown vice president of marketing/communications, walked an audience of Reno-area advertising executives through the yearlong process that led to the launch of Renown eight weeks ago.

“It was very important that people understand our private, not-for-profit status,” she told the Advertising Association of Northern Nevada, referring to confusion with the word “Washoe” in the old name.

The consultant, Monigle Associates of Denver, came up with 60 possible names based on three categories: descriptive, such as a geographical entity; “empty vessel,” or made-up words; and “connotative,” a word, or parts of several together, that has a meaning.

“You look for brevity, memorability,” Freyer said, and then you run exhaustive searches to avoid trademark infringements and other legal traps.

The initial list was trimmed to 10 options, and that was pared down to a final three, which were put before internal staff and community focus groups.

“Monigle told me focus groups might see red flags, and that’s what happened,” Freyer said.

One of the finalists was “Acompra,” a combination of “accomplished” and “comprehensive,” she said. But in it the panel groups saw the word “comp,” which led them to think the company was offering free health care.

“That was kind of the opposite of where we wanted to go,” Freyer said.

“Renown,” though, was a hit, and the focus groups saw “Reno,” or “Reno’s Own,” or “Reno Western Nevada” in it, Freyer said, but added that those interpretations had no bearing in the final decision.

“We picked it for ‘Renown’ and what it stands for,” she said of the word whose Webster’s definition is “widespread and high repute; fame.”

Update from the UNR Collegiate Chapter of the Reno-Tahoe AMA

Monday, November 13th, 2006

The University of Nevada Reno Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association has started off strong this semester. They have had four successful meetings, which have included a marketing professional speaker and a resume-writing workshop.

They have also completed one fundraiser thus far this semester. Funds were raised by distributing flyers for four Caughlin Ranch politicians.

The current fund raiser involves collecting used cell phones and ink cartridges. All of the funds raised will help send AMA students to the National Convention held in New Orleans this coming spring.

In addition to working on fundraising, the members have also completed a volunteer activity. They wrote letters for Up til’ Dawn, which is a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Each member addressed 10 letters to personal family and friends asking for donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Later in the spring, these members will enjoy an event to celebrate their efforts.

The Collegiate Chapter has seen a dramatic increase in attendance to their meetings this semester. Membership has increased by 20% and involvement from all the members has been exceptional. With the increase in membership the Collegiate Chapter has implemented various committees to complete the necessary semester duties, such as volunteering, fundraising, and case competition.

The case competition will be the main focus for the Collegiate Chapter throughout the next couple of months.

They are working diligently to create an exceptional Integrated Marketing Communication Plan. This plan is the main focus of the entire case and the Collegiate Chapter will continue their work until the submission date of December 15th.

The topic for the 2007 Case Competition is revitalizing New Orleans, with a target market of 18-30 year olds and the hope to again make New Orleans the fun, exciting, and popular place to visit. Collegiate members are meeting once a week to collect ideas and research. The resulting ideas and research has led the students to begin writing the initial components of the case. They hope that all their hard work and guidance from their advisor, Mary Groves will provide a great chance to be in the top eight at the National Convention.

As previously mentioned, the current fundraiser is through the collection of used cell phone and ink cartridges. The VP of Communications is heading this committee to collect the used cell phones and inkjet cartridges from UNR patrons and local businesses. Their goal is to raise $1,000 by the February of 2007.

You too can help the Collegiate Chapter raise funds by donating your old cell phones and inkjet cartridges. If you would like to help please contact either Isabella Schambeck at (831) 588-4960 or thebella_2@yahoo.com, or Tonya Heinrich at (775) 787-7156 or luv2trn3@sbcglobal.net.

What are RSS feeds?

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

A recent AP article that also ran on the Reno Gazette Journal’s website explains what RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are and why you should use them.

Click here to read the article on how you can improve your consumption and delivery of information.

Any marketer today should be familiar with this technology, know how to use it, and offer it on their business’s website, as well as any of their clients’ website.

Of course, I recognize that the adoption of new technology takes time, and requires the consent of the client, but at the very least you should be discussing its eventual use.

If you want the convenience of consuming information from a variety of reliable sources without actually having to visit them, RSS is for you.

RSS aggregators like MyYahoo, Google, and Bloglines are easy to setup, and you will be amazed at how convenient they are.

Get going!
