‘Wise Fries’ wows judges as smart marketing concept

For four University of Nevada, Reno students, “Wise Fries” was a smart campaign that they thought would appeal both to judges and the people of China.

A team of four students in the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources created a marketing plan for a fictitious potato snack product to be exported to China.A team from the University of Nevada, Reno took first place for “Most Innovative Marketing Idea” during the Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition. The team included, from right, faculty adviser Kynda Curtis, students Ty Smith, Sarah Nutting, Reana Bye and Jason Entsminger.

During the recent Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition in Anaheim, Calif., the University of Nevada, Reno team took second place overall in the international division and first place for “Most Innovative Marketing Idea.”

“The idea for ‘Wise Fries’ was chosen for a few main factors,” said Jason Entsminger, an agriculture and applied economics major. “First, Chinese consumers are beginning to eat snack products more and more today.

Innovative students honored at marketing competition

University of Nevada, RenoA team of students from the University took second place overall in the international division and first place for “Most Innovative Marketing Idea” during the recent Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition in Anaheim, Calif.

The resource economics students from Nevada also took top-five finishes for “Best PowerPoint Presentation,” and “Product Most Likely to Succeed” during the competition, which was held March 7.

The awards were received for a marketing plan for “Wise Fries,” a potato snack product to be exported to China. The product and plan was developed by students in an undergraduate course in the College of the Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR) during the 2006 fall semester. The marketing team consisted of four students, including Reana Bye, a finance major from the College of Business, Sarah Nutting, a speech communication major from the College of Liberal Arts, Ty Smith, an agricultural education major from the College of Education and Jason Entsminger, an agriculture and applied economics major from CABNR. They were advised by Kynda Curtis, assistant professor of Resource Economics in CABNR and state specialist with University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Marketing Ideas Needed!

The Silicon Valley AMA is publishing a book called Marketing Thought in connection with their upcoming Marketing Thought conference. They’re trying to take a snapshot of the best marketing ideas from today’s marketing thought leaders.

In connection with that effort, they’ve invited the Reno-Tahoe Chapter to submit ideas. The best ideas will be published in Marketing Thought and the authors of those ideas will be invited to present at our conference in Silicon Valley alongside Guy Kawasaki (The Art of Innovation) and Andy Sernovitz (Word of Mouth Marketing).
